The Pathway To Citizenship When You're Entering The US As A Refugee

Posted on

The United States allows some individuals to immigrate under the status of a refugee. However, to qualify as a refugee, you will need to meet one of several requirements. However, regardless of your status, you will always be able to meet with an immigration lawyer to discuss your legal options.

Qualifications Needed To Be a Refugee

A refugee needs to be outside the United States when they are applying for refugee status. You must not have already resettled in another country. For example, if you have managed to reach a safe country, you will not be classified as a refugee.

You will need to be inspected. If you are prohibited from entering the United States, you will be immediately returned to your country. You must present yourself in person to an immigration officer.

Humanitarian Concerns

To be allowed to immigrate to the United States as a refugee, you will need to have a special humanitarian concern. You will need to fear that you are being persecuted for your religion, race, nationality, membership in a social group, or your political opinion. The US Refugee Admissions Program is responsible for referring individuals who could potentially become refugees.

Once you have received a referral, you will need to fill out an application and will need assistance when doing so. You can also hire an immigration lawyer who can give you more insight and help you fill out your application. There is no fee for applying and the information you provide to become qualified to immigrate to the United States will not be shared with your home country.

Eligibility of Family Members

Your spouse and children will be allowed to come with you if you obtain refugee status. You may be able to also bring other family members under certain circumstances. If your family members also qualify as refugees, they may be able to come on their own. For example, if your race is being persecuted in your home country, other family members of the same race may also be eligible.

You Are Not Yet a Permanent Citizen

Coming to the United States as a refugee does not mean that you are a citizen of the United States. You will still need help from an immigration lawyer when applying for a green card. This will allow you to become a permanent resident. Then, you can attempt to become a citizen and have a permanent right to remain in the United States.
